History of the teams’ meetings

In recent years, Southend have been held in non-league, whilst Barrow continued life in the English Football League.

The two sides last met in 2021 and, whilst Southend were the victors that day, it wasn’t enough to save them from their eventual relegation, which was actually confirmed that same day. In the earlier fixture that season, the Shrimpers also took all three points, and this was with just 10 men after Greg Halford was sent off.

Despite going down that season, they clearly had Barrow’s number and the Bluebirds were also embroiled in the fight for survival but managed to hang on.

Fun Facts

Nicknamed the Shrimpers because of the area's historical connection to the Maritime (fishing) industry. This is also one of the quarters on the club’s badge!

The club’s relegation from League Two back in 2021 marked the first time they had ever dropped out of the English Football League.

If not for poor end-of-season form, they could have been a founding member of the then newly formed Premier League.

Oli Coker

Coker was named Southend captain during the summer, after immediately impressing new manager Kieron Dyer.

Since assuming the role, he’s got off to a terrific start, scoring in the club’s opening game against Altrincham.

Leon Chambers-Parilon

The 24-year-old is entering the third year of his stay at Roots Hall.

He’s played a part in the club’s recent pushes for promotion. His goals in the play-off quarter-final and the eventual final certainly live long in the memory.

Like Coker, he also got off to the perfect start on the opening day with a goal against Altirncham..

Player Profiles - Yeovil Town

Keaton Ward

Keaton Ward is a household name at this level having played for several different clubs in the last few years. Ward has featured for Boston, Altrincham, Gateshead, and now, of course, Barrow.

Last season, he managed 11 goal contributions in 18 games for Gateshead, a good enough return to make the step up to the Bluebirds. Alongside his numbers, he’s also become renowned for scoring ‘wonder goals’. He drove one of these home a few weeks ago against Yeovil to open his account this season.

Isaac Marriott

Marriott made the move to Barrow this summer, after spending several years in red and white for Altrincham F.C. He became a crucial part of the squad at Moss Lane, especially in his final campaign as the injury issues were resolved, and he played 50 games.

Now playing for Barrow, this consistent run of starts has well and truly continued. He has a wide range of attributes, which former Altrincham manager Phil Parkinson praised openly, and this bodes well for the heart of the Bluebirds' midfield.
